The benefits of a modded or chipped xbox are numerous and individually warrant an individual making the conversion. When combined, there becomes little reason to keep an xbox unmodified!
Foremost, it must be said that although modding an xbox is relatively easy to someone with decent knowledge of computers and their xbox console. For someone who doesn't know a HD (hard drive) from a DVD Drive it can be quite a time consuming process. none the less, it is an extremely interesting and fun project.
I wont go into the details of how to mod an xbox for there already exist many a decent guide on how to do this, i will focus on the benefits of a chipped xbox.
Foremost, the xbox, with the aid of software such as Xbox Media Center or XBMC becomes a media centre for your home. With FTP software one is able to rip their DVD collection or download Pod Casts and easily transfer them to their xbox in order to watch films or programs on a standard TV. This eliminates the need to burn DVDs on a regular basis. Moreover one is able to play all manner of files from XVID to AVI and MP4 to WMV. Confusing for people who have to convert them to DVD readable files on a regular basis. The xbox eliminates the need for this.
In addition, the moddified xbox will also play all manner of music files including the most common, mp3 file. As i type I am listening to a track from my extensive music collection that my chipped xbox affords me.
An additional benefit is the ability to rip games onto the hard drive so that one can play them without the need for the disk. Useful for those of us who lose disks or lend games to friends only to find they come back scratched and unusable.
Perhaps one of the greater achievements of the xbox playing community is the development of extensive and free 'homebrew' software developed purely for the modified xbox user. One such example of this is the software developed to replace xbox live. Many free versions of similar software exist which allow the user to battle it out with players from across the globe for the costly sum of nothing. A delightful change from the costs incurred courtesy of Microsoft.
As xbox users who have modded their machines will attest, if an xbox could possible get even better, it would be via the use of a mod chip which allows the user unprecedented access to its computing capacity.
